San Francisco Children's Oral Health Strategic Plan

The Children’s Oral Health Collaborative is committed to eradicating health disparities in childhood oral health and making San Francisco cavity-free.

In 2013, a diverse group of stakeholders, in order to meet the dental needs of our community, joined together to develop San Francisco’s first Children's Oral Health Strategic Planning effort. While the city has made progress in improving children’s oral health over the past 10 years, there are many groups of children in the city who still suffer high levels of preventable dental disease. Over the course of a year, this strategic planning work was supported by the UCSF CTSI Community Engagement & Health Policy Program, and the SF Department of Public Health. The group engaged over 50 community-wide stakeholders, including the San Francisco Dental Society, and in 2014 developed San Francisco’s first citywide strategic plan to systematically improve children’s oral health in San Francisco.

The Children’s Oral Health Collaborative continues the work to implement the plan within the following 4 areas:

  • Increase ACCESS to oral health care among underserved San Francisco communities
  • INTEGRATE oral health into San Francisco's robust medical care systems
  • PROMOTE the importance of children's oral health to decision-makers, parents, teachers, medical professionals and other caregivers
  • Create citywide EVALUATION and reporting systems, so that progress and challenges are visible to all stakeholders
